Eager to succeed and climb that so called ladder. All while trading my time for dollars…and that meant trading A LOT of my time.
Scared to take the risk of becoming an entrepreneur no matter how many great ideas I came up with.
Ships, Tundras, & Airplanes...
While my early days included several years in the U.S. Navy that allowed me to see many countries, I was always thinking there must be more…plus if I’m honest…I wasn’t the best at following orders. I simply liked doing my own thing.
My corporate days included success at companies like Toyota, Alaska Airlines, and Kaiser Permanente…but I was always left with a feeling in my gut that I was meant for more. I wanted to help people and really leave behind something more than just my time.
The shift to becoming my own boss and running my own web agency was anything but successful in the beginning. When I finally did “take the leap”, I was afflicted with FOMO, impostor syndrome, and a host of missteps that made everything feel harder and just out of reach.
And what happen next scared the hell out of me…just as I started to gain real momentum with my web agency I realized…
“I’m building the wrong damn business”
From Award Winning Agency Owner to...
I love the website design and development but I was still limited by time. And that meant I was still trading my time for money. Working longer hours eventually led to burnout and the fire I once had was going out.
This was not the lifestyle I dreamed about because no matter how many hours I worked I could never help as many people as I wanted. I love the website industry but let’s get real, it doesn’t have the best reputation. Nearly everyone knows of someone who has been ripped off by a web developer.
It generally goes like this…web developer sells the idea of this awesome website with all the features the client wants. Takes a large down payment or full payment up front and the client never receives what they were promised. At best they get a site up but they are left with nothing more than an online business card that does not convert. Worst case, the client pays out the money and they never hear from the web developer again.
So in typical Type A fashion, I went to work on finding a better way…
Back To Basics...and BOOM
I dove into all the things, learning about online marketing with Facebook Ads, online sales funnels, chat bots, podcasts, YouTube marketing, webinars, and every “ninja” trick I could find. Seriously, I really dug into learning hard.
But nothing was happening. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months.
This was a new place for me as I had always been an action taker and was known for getting things done. Suddenly I found myself almost paralyzed with fear which drove inaction. So I came to my senses and gave myself permission to just be me. I remember telling myself, “Just start! You will figure it out along the way.”
Things finally changed when I stopped chasing the shiny objects and spending most of my time “learning” (aka hiding) with books, webinars, and online courses. Don’t get me wrong, I learned a ton from some of the best in the business but spending all my time “learning” meant I was more of a Wantrapreneur than Entrepreneur.
When I started being myself again, something strange happened…I found a new sense of energy, focus, and passion for what I wanted to do. Heck, what I was meant to do.
I found the joy I had been missing…and my business took off!
